They say in pretty big letters on their website that they are.. (quote)
'MUCH MORE THAN JUST A GREEN GROCERS'
And rightly so, The Green Grocers is an independent deli, bakery and cafe selling whole foods, organic food and drink and eco friendly products. They stock local products and have a big selection of vegan food (if that is your thing). We didn't spend a lot of time looking in the shop part but instead chose to have some breakfast. Me being me I was pretty hungry! I had work at 1pm so needed to be in and out but next time I will make sure I have extra time to look at the shop part and might even treat myself to some local cheese (big cheese fan here, but that's for another blog post)
It was a cold day, Winter is here in it's entire glory and well you know those days where you just don't seem to wrap up in enough layers, this day was one of those. So we both had a hot chocolate to start. A nice organic hot chocolate with those fancy leafy flower type professional barista drawings on top (see photo) I always try to do these but have not succeeded yet - so if anyone knows the skill of this please do let me know- also what a lovely succulent making an appearance too (I love them)
I was thinking of something small to keep me going for a bit and Kathrine was thinking of poached eggs - she'd been here before so knew what it would be like. I was to be honest feeling more and more hungry the more I looked at the amazing food options on the menu so in the end decided to go for one of the biggest options, the 'Norfolk Breakfast' that is 2 of everything. Like Noah's Ark, I'd feel sorry if something was on it's own, 1 of something doesn't sound as good as 2. I did get 1 bacon and 1 bubble and squeak and obviously more than one baked bean.. Anyway.. Kathrine went for poached eggs on toast (which always makes us laugh because well they look like balls don't they!) and beans. So when our breakfast arrived yes I did feel like a massive fatty as mine looked huuuuge next to hers!!
It was good though, I probably should have asked for more bread but there wouldn't have been much room on my plate and using the table would be a silly option. I'd love to say my stomach was bigger than my eyes or whatever the correct phrase is, but alas I ate EVERYTHING, even the mushrooms!! (I'm a bit funny with mushrooms as they remind me of slugs, but they are good for you so I am just telling myself that and gobbling away)
For afters we just had some Pukka tea which I LOVE, I had Detox and Kathrine had Love.
All in all my first experience of this Green Grocers was pretty good, I think it's always best to go in with no expectations really, like I had no idea what it would be apart from perhaps a Green Grocers. So do check it out if you are a local to Norwich, or if you're visiting it's a good place to go for a break from the city. The prices are good, the wait isn't long if you're starving and it's nice to know you're eating organic and fresh produce.
What's pretty good about this place is that there's free parking, it's open 7 days a week, it's not a far walk from town or if you live around the golden triangle area it's pretty easy to get to! There's a shop AND a cafe with lots on offer AND they are licensed to sell beer and wine. You can get take out food. Also I heard that on a Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening they serve the biggest selection of vegan pizzas in Norwich made on artisan sourdough so if you're a vegan (or fancy a change for a day) then this is definitely a place to check out, between 5-6pm you can get a pizza and a glass of organic beer or wine for just £10. Which is GOOD! They serve the pizzas from 5 - 9pm so if you live close by it's an easy stumble home.
The only thing I'd say is, if you're a 'feeling the cold' type of person like me then do remember to wrap up before you go out as it is cold in there. Other than that, it's really great, feels comfortable and easy going and the staff are very helpful and patient even with indecisive me!
I enjoyed the food there and will be returning soon!
Hope you've enjoyed reading,
